Psoriasis is not Terminal, it can be Controlled
Psoriasis is considered to be an incurable disease in the world. One can say that doctors categorically deny that this disease can be cured but the head of Abovyan's St. Mary's Medical Center assures that they cure this disease in their clinic.
To clear up these misunderstandings, Andranik Mkrtchyan, the director of the clinic answered to some questions during an interview with press, and presented clinic's research and success stories related to psoriasis.
-Hello Mr. Mkrtchyan. Before referring to your methods of treatment, please describe how psoriasis is expressed.
-Hello. This disease expressed in the form of rashes, can affect any part of the body, more often it affects elbows, knees, and the partings of the scalp. Our specialists single out 34 types of psoriasis. Each type in itself is divided into subtypes.
- What can cause psoriasis?
- The hereditary predisposition may be the cause of psoriasis - genes have been discovered that are responsible for the development of psoriasis but the disease usually begins with the effects of the so-called triggering factors: such as stress, adverse environmental conditions, chemicals or some medications, etc. The presence of internal organs diseases or infections has a big significance too. Particularly, the role of stress is great in this issue.
The duration of progression and regression is very different even for the same patient. Different factors can become causes of progression: such as seasonal climate change mainly in winter-spring months, neuropsychological stress, metabolic disorders, etc.
-How long do you treat psoriasis?
- The interest in psoriasis is family-friendly. My grandfather practiced medicine and then my father did; now I am also interested in skin diseases, particularly in psoriasis. We have serious successes in the treatment of skin diseases, especially of psoriasis. Over the years, we have improved the treatment methods.
-And what are these methods?
-The main effectiveness of the treatment of the disease depends not only on the methods used, but also on the individual approach to each patient. We treat each patient individually depending on the peculiarities of the disease.
The need for baths and physiotherapy is felt in case of the moderate and severe stages of the diseases.
A patient should be psychologically predisposed that this disease is not fatal. Psychological support is also very important to reach the expected result.
- How long does it take to see the positive outcome?
-Remission is noticed from the first day. A significant difference or about 50% regression of the affected area is observed approximately in 10 days and the remaining result depending on the peculiarities of the disease may be noticed in a few months - on average, it lasts about four months. The result in case of disciplinary patients is very quickly noticed. If they do not get any other treatments before visiting us, we succeed to manage the disease much easier.
- Can a patient not bother that the disease will not recur after the treatment course?
- There are many cases when the remission of psoriasis is maintained for a lifetime as a result of our treatment. Occasionally, the disease progresses and that mainly depends on a patient's discipline or the emergence of new unfavorable factors. There are patients who do not have the necessary checks after the course of treatment and do not follow our advice, that's why we face problems. If the disease does not recur for 6 months after the course of treatment, there is no danger anymore.
- So, that means that the disease is curable. In this case, why do others assure that it is incurable?
-In fact, we are able to manage this disease. And what does the term "treatment" mean? This is a very difficult question. There are scientists who believe that no disease can be completely cured and any experienced disease leaves its mark on the organism. In case of the etiotropic treatment, the doctor affects the cause of the disease, for example, infections are treated with antibiotics. In case of the pathogenetic treatment, the mechanisms of the disease are affected, for example, in case of diabetes, medicine is injected, and the palliative treatment suggests regression or elimination of the symptoms, as a painkilling in case of pain.
-And what methods of treatment do you apply?
-In the vast majority of diseases, as with psoriasis, there is no etiotropic treatment yet. Besides, almost no disease can be treated with only the etiologic treatment and other types of treatment are also needed. For example, it is not possible to achieve results by means of injecting antibiotics into a person ill with sepsis. The treatment of psoriasis is also multicomponent and it involves the influence on the mechanisms and factors affecting its development and manifestation. The result of the treatment is remission. I empathize the term "remission" special for doctors. As a result of our treatment we reach remission, a drastic, stable regression in the activity of the disease that results in a sustainable disappearance or remission of the symptoms. As a result of the treatment, a patient not only feels good physically, but also the quality of his or her life changes. Although psoriasis is not an infectious disease the public approach to these patients and the resulting psychological changes in a patient can be much worse than the physical manifestations of the disease. The result of our treatment is also the improvement of a patient's quality of life. The facts of our work efficiency are our patients. We do not want to compare our work with the work carried out by other doctors. We have heard from patients, although we do not want to believe that almost all doctors end the consultation with pure external examination and the prescription of strong hormonal lubricants as much as possible. Whereas, a patient should be thoroughly examined to find out the factors that contribute to the disease especially in him or her, to identify the psychological problems that have contributed to the progression of the disease and that have emerged because of the disease.
In the same dermatology books, dozens of psoriasis treatment methods are described but for no reason mainly hormones are applied there. If a person ill with diabetes is prescribed a diet, lifestyle change, physical exercises, and as a result, it is really possible to control diabetes, is it considered a treatment or not? The patient ill with the same diabetes lives with medicine for decades, should we consider it a treatment or announce that "diabetes is not cured"? If an oncologic patient is prescribed drugs and it is possible to extend the life span increasing its quality, is it a treatment or not? In medical literature, even some of the diseases that are currently incurable, such as rabies, the mitigation measures for a patient are written under the heading "treatment." Only a physician with no basic medical knowledge and most importantly, with no prospective can announce that "this or that disease is not cured". Making this statement, he closes the ways to the willingness to research, seek, self-educate and help a patient.
Those who vilify our clinic and our activities I do not take seriously. We have reached results we can confidently announce and be proud of. It's the result of our hard work and if other doctors reach similar results, I will be only happy. Different doctors in the republic cooperate with us, as the causes of this disease, as I have mentioned above, and each problem should be under the supervision of its specialist.
-Mr. Mkrtchyan, and what price limits can you mention, to what extent is this treatment available to patients?
-I cannot stress the exact price because it depends on the degree of the disease but I can say that it is affordable for everyone. Although we cannot help within the scope of the state order, we have a flexible discount system that applies to children, pensioners, families of soldiers and so on. Submitting appropriate papers, they can save enough money. There were cases when the treatment was completely free. We do not treat our patients as customers. We try to do everything possible to help them.
- Thank you for the interview.
- Let all patients get well soon.
